OUR SCHOOL
SYNOPSIS
Alin, Benjamin and Dana are Roma children who are in a struggle to overcome prejudice in their rural village in Romania. The Roma, also known by the slang term ‘Gypsy,’ have been persecuted for generations and still suffer under a system of segregation in Romanian society. Separate schools and separate living areas that are set well outside the city lead to separate identities for the Roma, people who truly have nothing and yet persist with enviable drive and fortitude.
Filmed over a four year period, OUR SCHOOL follows Alin, Benjamin and Dana as they navigate the trials and pitfalls of attending a mainstream school in the center of town for the first time, with conflicting results.
OUR SCHOOL is a deeply moving portrait of three remarkable young people in a struggle that is beyond national, beyond continental; it is truly universal.
